Local SEO in Vancouver: How to Rank Across Metro Vancouver

When someone in Metro Vancouver searches for “plumber near me”, “accountant Burnaby” or “web designer North Vancouver”, Google shows a map with three businesses before any regular results. Those three spots — the local pack — get a large share of clicks and calls.

Metro Vancouver is also unusual: it’s one region made up of many cities, from Vancouver and Burnaby to Surrey, Richmond, Coquitlam and the North Shore. A business can be a short drive from a customer and still not show up, because Google thinks it serves a different city. Here’s how to rank locally across the region.

How Google ranks local businesses

Google’s local results are based on three main factors:

FactorWhat it meansWhat you can do
RelevanceHow well your business matches the searchAccurate categories, services and website content
DistanceHow close you are to the searcher or the location in the searchSet your service areas; create pages for the cities you serve
ProminenceHow well known and trusted your business isReviews, links, mentions and a strong website

You can’t change where a searcher is standing, but you can influence relevance and prominence a lot.

Step 1: Get your Google Business Profile right

Your Google Business Profile is the foundation of local SEO. My Google Maps ranking guide covers the setup in detail. For Metro Vancouver businesses, pay special attention to:

  • Primary category: the single most important choice. Pick the category that best describes your core service.
  • Service areas: if you visit customers (trades, cleaning, IT support), set up a service-area business and list the cities you actually serve — for example Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and Richmond. Hide your home address if customers don’t come to you.
  • Services and description: describe what you do in plain language, including the areas you cover.
  • Photos and updates: real photos of your work, team and premises, plus regular posts.

Step 2: Make your website clearly local

Google needs to see on your website that you serve the region:

  • Mention your city and service areas naturally on your homepage, service pages and contact page.
  • Use your city in key title tags, for example “Bookkeeping Services in Burnaby”.
  • Add LocalBusiness structured data with your service area, so search engines understand where you work.
  • Embed a map and make your phone number tappable on mobile.

Step 3: Create useful city or neighbourhood pages

If you serve several cities, a page for each important one can help — as long as each page is genuinely useful. Include the services you offer there, local projects (with permission), how you work in that area and relevant details such as travel or on-site availability.

Avoid copying the same page and swapping the city name. Thin “doorway pages” can be ignored by Google or hurt your site.

Step 4: Earn reviews — consistently

Reviews influence both rankings and whether people choose you. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct review link, and reply to every review, positive or negative. Never buy reviews or offer incentives for them — it’s against Google’s policies.

Step 5: Keep your details consistent

Make sure your business name, address (or service area) and phone number are identical on your website, Google Business Profile and listings such as Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp and relevant Canadian and industry directories.

Step 6: Build local authority

Local links and mentions show Google you’re part of the community:

  • Local business associations and chambers of commerce in your city.
  • Sponsorships of local events, sports clubs or charities.
  • Features in local news or community publications.
  • Partnerships with complementary local businesses.

Earn these naturally — never buy links. My SEO checklist covers the other foundations.

Step 7: Track local results

  • Google Business Profile performance: calls, direction requests, website clicks and the searches that found you.
  • Search Console: queries that include city names.
  • Rank checks from different locations: local rankings in Surrey can look very different from rankings in downtown Vancouver.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rank in cities where I don’t have an office?

In the map results, distance matters, so it’s harder. But you can rank in regular results for cities you serve with strong, genuinely useful pages and local authority.

Should I use a virtual office address in Vancouver?

No. Google’s guidelines don’t allow virtual offices or mailboxes unless staffed during business hours. Use a service-area profile instead.

How long does local SEO take?

Fixes to your profile can have an effect within weeks. Competitive categories in Vancouver usually take several months of consistent work.
